Finally, after a few weeks of sitting on the edge, preparing for Prime Day, we can relax and look back to see what we’ve learned from this year’s event.

If you’re like most of us, you probably want to know some ‘behind the scenes’ stats, as well as compare this data to last year’s prime day. Worry not SellerLegend hero, we’ve got your back!

Prime Day Shopping

Let’s actually start with what we had a year ago, in 2019.

Prime day of 2019 actually happened during the month of July. We all know that Amazon was trying to get a spike in sales during this slow month as everybody is seeing a big drop in sales around that time. However, something made Amazon recalculate their decision and move the date to October, right before the holidays kick in. We believe that the main reason is that no matter how much you would like to generate more sales during July, many times you simply can’t because a lot of people are away during the months of June-July. It is better to prepare a big sales event when you know for a fact that all your buyers are at home and are already preparing their wallets for the holiday season. In fact, by changing the date to October, Amazon basically announced the beginning date of the “Q4 Shopping Rush” a couple of weeks earlier than usual. What better excuse to start selling if not for the FBA warehouses which are already packed to the roof with products!

This year, Amazon’s Prime Day sales made the biggest difference both to Amazon and to the small & medium businesses relying on them. The prime members saved over $1.4 billion and most of the businesses using Amazon’s platform surpassed $3.5 billion in sales, a near 60% boost from last year – it’s a win win! But that’s not where it ends – Amazon is getting better and better at encouraging more clicks from shoppers regularly, not only on special events – and what’s sexier than reliability?

As a seller, you will find that ‘regular’ days with Amazon are still worthwhile – a healthy relationship where the dull days aren’t so dull. They show more ads in more placements and find ways to encourage shoppers to click on sponsored products rather than relying on organic results.

Hope that helped you get a better understanding of a few numbers behind the Prime Day sales.
